AGM vs EFB vs Lead-Acid: Which Battery Does Your Car Need?

Written by the 800Battery team ·

QUICK ANSWER

Fit the same technology your car was built with, or better. Cars without start-stop use a standard or calcium lead-acid battery. Entry-level start-stop cars use EFB. Cars with advanced start-stop, energy recovery or heavy electrical loads use AGM. An AGM battery must always be replaced with AGM; an EFB can be replaced with EFB or upgraded to AGM.

Key facts

  • No start-stop: standard flooded or calcium
  • Entry-level start-stop: EFB
  • Advanced start-stop, premium and high-load cars: AGM
  • AGM must be replaced with AGM
  • The label on your current battery tells you which type you have

The types side by side

Standard lead-acid (flooded)Lead plates in liquid electrolyteConventional cars without start-stopNo
CalciumFlooded, with calcium-alloy grids that lose less waterDaily drivers in hot climates; low maintenanceNo
EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery)Flooded, with reinforced plates for more charge cyclesEntry-level start-stop carsYes
AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat)Electrolyte absorbed in glass-fibre mats, sealed and spill-proofAdvanced start-stop, premium cars, heavy electronicsYes
GelElectrolyte set as a gel, sealedDeep-cycle and auxiliary use, 4x4s with extra equipmentNot as a starter battery in most cars

Going down a level is the mistake that costs money. A standard battery in a start-stop car is cycled far harder than it was built for and wears out quickly, and the start-stop system usually switches itself off. Our AGM and start-stop service explains why, and what registration involves.

How to tell which battery your car has

  1. 1Read the label on the battery. AGM and EFB batteries say so on the top or front.
  2. 2Check whether the car has start-stop. If the engine switches itself off at traffic lights, or there is a button marked A with a circular arrow, the car needs EFB or AGM.
  3. 3Look in the owner's manual under battery specification.
  4. 4Or tell us the make, model and year, and we will confirm it.

Batteries are not always under the bonnet. On many BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Land Rover models the battery is in the boot or under a seat. The car make pages note where to look.

Which type copes best with UAE heat?

All lead-acid batteries age faster in heat, but not equally. Calcium grids lose less water than older designs, which is why calcium batteries are the sensible baseline here. AGM goes further: the electrolyte is held in the mats, so there is no free liquid to lose, and the design tolerates deep cycling. In VARTA's Dubai taxi test the AGM batteries outlasted the conventional ones by a wide margin. The details are in the heat and battery life guide.

That does not mean every car should be converted to AGM. A car without start-stop charges its battery in a way designed for flooded batteries, and a good calcium battery of the right size serves it well.

Type is not the only thing that has to match

  • Physical size and hold-down: the battery must fit the tray and clamp securely.
  • Terminal type and layout: positive on the correct side, posts of the correct style. Japanese and Korean cars generally use JIS sizes, European cars DIN sizes.
  • Capacity (Ah): at least what the car was specified with.
  • Cranking power (CCA): at least the original rating.

These terms are defined in the battery glossary.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the difference between AGM and EFB batteries?

EFB is a reinforced flooded battery for entry-level start-stop cars. AGM holds its electrolyte in glass-fibre mats, is sealed, and handles deeper cycling and heavier electrical loads. AGM is the higher specification of the two.

Can I replace an AGM battery with a standard battery?

No. A car designed around AGM will wear out a standard battery quickly and is likely to disable start-stop and show warnings. Replace AGM with AGM.

Can I replace an EFB battery with AGM?

Yes. AGM is an accepted upgrade from EFB. The car should be coded for the new battery type where it has a battery management system.

Do I need an AGM battery if my car has no start-stop?

Not usually. A calcium battery of the correct size is the right choice for most cars without start-stop. AGM is worth considering if the car carries heavy extra electrical equipment.

Is a calcium battery the same as a lead-acid battery?

It is a type of lead-acid battery. The grids are alloyed with calcium, which reduces water loss and self-discharge. Most maintenance-free batteries sold today are calcium batteries.

Which battery type is best for a Land Cruiser or Patrol?

It depends on the model year and equipment. Most take a large-capacity calcium battery; vehicles with start-stop or heavy accessories need AGM. Send us the model and year and we will confirm.
