AGM & START-STOP BATTERIES
AGM and EFB Battery Replacement for Start-Stop Cars in Dubai
Written by the 800Battery team ·
QUICK ANSWER
Cars with a start-stop system need an AGM or EFB battery, not a standard one. 800Battery supplies and fits the correct AGM or EFB battery at your location in Dubai, 24/7, and registers it with the car's battery management system where the car requires it. A car built with an AGM battery must be given an AGM battery again.
Key facts
- AGM: start-stop with energy recovery, premium and high-load cars
- EFB: entry-level start-stop cars
- AGM replaces AGM. EFB can be replaced with EFB or upgraded to AGM
- New battery registered with the car where required
- Fitted at your location anywhere in Dubai, 24/7
Why start-stop cars need a different battery
A conventional car starts its engine a few times a day. A start-stop car may restart it dozens of times in a single commute, and while the engine is off the battery alone runs the air conditioning fan, lights, infotainment and every control unit. That is deep, repeated cycling, and a standard flooded battery is not built for it.
Battery makers are explicit about this. VARTA's replacement guidance states that an AGM battery must be replaced with an AGM battery, and that a conventional battery fitted to a start-stop car wears out quickly.
AGM or EFB: which one does your car take?
| EFB | AGM | |
|---|---|---|
| Stands for | Enhanced Flooded Battery | Absorbent Glass Mat |
| Construction | Liquid electrolyte with reinforced plates | Electrolyte held in glass-fibre mats, sealed |
| Typical use | Entry-level start-stop | Start-stop with energy recovery, premium cars, heavy electrical loads |
| Can replace it with | EFB, or AGM as an upgrade | AGM only |
| Our warranty | 18 months | 18 to 24 months |
The simplest way to tell is the label on the battery already in the car. It will say AGM, EFB or neither. If you cannot reach it, tell us the make, model and year and we will confirm it. The full comparison, including standard and calcium batteries, is in the battery types guide.
Battery registration and coding
Many modern cars monitor the battery with a sensor on the negative terminal and adjust charging as the battery ages. When a new battery goes in, the car has to be told. Otherwise it keeps charging the new battery as if it were the worn one it replaced.
- Skipping registration can leave start-stop disabled, shorten the new battery's life or trigger warning messages.
- Changing battery type or capacity usually needs coding as well as registration.
- The procedure varies by manufacturer, so the equipment has to support your car.
We register and code batteries at the car. The pages for BMW, Audi, Land Rover and the other car makes note what each typically needs.
Signs your start-stop battery is wearing out
- Start-stop no longer switches the engine off at traffic lights. The car disables it to protect a weak battery.
- A battery or energy-management message appears on the dashboard.
- Comfort features are switched off or reduced when the car is parked.
- The engine cranks more slowly after the car has sat for a few days.
Any of these is a reason for a free battery test before the battery fails outright.
Price of AGM and EFB batteries
AGM and EFB batteries cost more than standard ones because of how they are built. Our ranges, fitted at your location:
| Battery Type | Price | Warranty | Best For |

| Calcium | AED 300 – 500 | 12–18 Months | Daily drivers in hot climates, low maintenance |
| EFB | AED 450 – 700 | 18 Months | Entry-level start-stop vehicles |
| AGM | AED 650 – 1,200 | 18–24 Months | Start-stop & premium cars (BMW, Mercedes, Range Rover) |
| Gel | AED 800 – 1,400 | 24 Months | 4x4s, off-road & deep-cycle use |
| Lithium-Ion | AED 1,500 – 3,000 | 24 Months | Performance, luxury & hybrid vehicles |
All prices include VAT, free installation at your location, free battery check and free old battery disposal.
Brands we fit in AGM and EFB include Varta and Bosch. See all battery brands, or the price guide for costs by vehicle type.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can I fit a normal battery in a start-stop car to save money?
It will fit and the car will start, but the battery will wear out quickly and the start-stop system is likely to stop working. A car built with AGM must get AGM; a car built with EFB needs EFB or AGM.
Can I upgrade from EFB to AGM?
Yes. AGM is a valid upgrade for a car that came with EFB, and it copes better with heat and heavy electrical use. The car should be coded for the new battery type.
Why has my start-stop system stopped working?
The most common reason is a battery that no longer has enough charge or health for the car to risk switching the engine off. A battery test will confirm it.
Do BMW and Mercedes really need special batteries?
Most recent models do. They use AGM batteries with a monitoring sensor, and BMW in particular needs every new battery registered with the car. Many Mercedes models also have a separate auxiliary battery.
How long does an AGM battery last in Dubai?
Heat shortens the life of every lead-acid battery, AGM included, though AGM tolerates it better than a standard battery. How long yours lasts depends on how the car is driven and parked. We fit AGM batteries with 18 to 24 months warranty.
