Dead Battery in Basement or Tower Parking: What to Do

Written by the 800Battery team ·

QUICK ANSWER

A dead battery in basement or tower parking does not need a tow truck. A mobile technician can walk in with a booster pack or a new battery and do the whole job in your parking bay. Have the building name, parking level, bay number and your car's make and model ready, and tell building security a technician is coming.

Key facts

  • No towing needed: jump start or replacement is done in the bay
  • Have ready: building, entrance, level, bay number, car make and model
  • Tell security or reception a technician is on the way
  • Mobile signal is often weak underground: send details before you go down
  • Leave the bonnet closed until the technician arrives

Why it happens in car parks

Most cars in Dubai's towers spend their nights, and often several days at a stretch, in a basement or podium bay. That is where a weak battery gets found out. The car is parked with a battery already tired from heat and short trips, sits while the alarm and control units draw a little current, and has nothing left when you come back to it.

It is also the worst place for the traditional fix. Recovery trucks are tall, basement entrances are low, and ramps are tight. Pushing an automatic car out of a bay is not practical either. The background is in the car won't start guide.

Why a mobile battery service suits basements

The work is the same as anywhere else: a jump start if the battery is only discharged, or a battery replacement if a test shows it has failed.

What to tell us when you call

  1. 1The building or mall name, and the community. A shared location pin for the entrance helps most.
  2. 2Which entrance leads to your parking, if the building has more than one.
  3. 3The parking level and bay number, and any zone or colour code.
  4. 4Your car's make, model and year, so the right battery comes on the first trip.
  5. 5Whether access needs a card, a remote or a call to security.
  6. 6A phone number that works where you will be waiting.

Getting the technician into the building

  • Residential towers: let the security desk or concierge know, and meet the technician at the entrance if the car park is access-controlled.
  • Office buildings: visitor parking rules vary, so check with reception whether a service vehicle may enter or should park outside.
  • Malls: note the nearest entrance, the level and the pillar or zone number. Mall car parks are large and bays look alike.
  • Gated communities: register the visit at the gate if your community requires it.

While you wait

  • Stop trying to start the car. Repeated attempts drain what little charge is left.
  • Switch off lights, air conditioning and anything plugged in.
  • If the car is locked with a dead battery, use the mechanical key blade inside the fob.
  • Know where the battery is. On many European cars it is in the boot or under a seat, with jump points under the bonnet.
  • Do not accept a jump from a stranger's car in a tight bay. Poor connections in a confined space are how electronics get damaged.

Where this comes up most

High-rise districts are where a basement breakdown is most likely: Dubai Marina, JBR, Jumeirah Lakes Towers, Downtown Dubai and Business Bay. We cover every community in the emirate; find yours on the Dubai areas page.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can a technician reach my car in basement or tower parking?

Yes. A battery technician works on foot with portable equipment, so basement height limits and tight ramps are not an obstacle. We need the building, level and bay number, and access through security.

Do I need to tow my car out of the basement to change the battery?

No. The battery is tested, jump started or replaced in the parking bay.

My car is locked and the battery is dead. How do I get in?

Most key fobs contain a mechanical key blade that opens the driver's door. Your owner's manual shows where the hidden lock is.

The battery is in the boot and the boot will not open. What now?

Cars with a boot-mounted battery have jump points under the bonnet for exactly this situation. The technician powers the car through those, which lets the boot open.

Can you replace a battery in a mall car park?

Yes. Tell us the mall, the entrance you used, the level and the zone or pillar number.
