Car Won't Start in Dubai? How to Tell if It Is the Battery

Written by the 800Battery team ·

QUICK ANSWER

If you turn the key or press the start button and hear rapid clicking, slow cranking or nothing at all, and the dashboard lights are dim, the battery is the most likely cause. If the lights are bright and the engine cranks at normal speed but will not fire, the problem is usually fuel or ignition, not the battery. A battery and charging test settles it either way.

Key facts

  • Rapid clicking or slow cranking with dim lights: almost always the battery
  • Normal cranking but no start: usually not the battery
  • Battery light on while driving: suspect the alternator
  • A jump start gets you moving; a test tells you why it happened
  • A swollen, leaking or sulphur-smelling battery must not be jump started

What the symptoms tell you

What you noticeMost likely causeWhat to do
Rapid clicking, dash lights dim or flickeringBattery too weak to turn the starterJump start, then test the battery
Engine turns over slowly, then may or may not startWeak or ageing batteryHave it tested before it fails completely
Nothing at all: no lights, no soundBattery fully flat or a loose or corroded terminalCheck the terminals are tight; call for a jump start and test
One loud click, lights stay brightStarter motor or its wiringWorkshop diagnosis; a new battery will not help
Engine cranks normally but does not fireFuel, ignition or immobiliserWorkshop diagnosis; not a battery fault
Starts with a jump, dies again within a dayBattery not holding charge, or alternator not chargingBattery and charging system test

What to do right now

  1. 1Make yourself safe. On a road, switch on the hazard lights and move away from traffic if you can.
  2. 2Switch off everything electrical: air conditioning, lights, phone chargers. Try once more.
  3. 3Check the gear selector is firmly in P or N, and that the key fob battery is not the problem. Many cars start if you hold the fob against the start button.
  4. 4Look at the battery only if it is easy and safe to reach. If the case is swollen, cracked or leaking, or you smell sulphur, leave it alone.
  5. 5Send us your location on WhatsApp or call. Tell us the make, model and where the car is parked.

Jump start or replace?

A battery that went flat for an obvious reason, such as lights left on or a car parked for weeks, will often recover after a jump start and a decent drive. A battery that failed with no obvious reason, particularly one that is past its second summer, is usually at the end of its life.

You do not have to guess. Our technician runs a battery and charging test after the engine is running. If the battery fails it, a replacement can be fitted on the same visit.

Warning signs before a battery fails

Batteries rarely fail entirely without notice. In hot climates the warning period is short, so act on the first sign rather than the third.

  • Slower cranking, most noticeable on the first start of the day
  • Headlights that dim at idle and brighten when you rev
  • Start-stop that no longer switches the engine off
  • Electric windows or the infotainment screen behaving sluggishly
  • White or blue-green deposits on the terminals
  • A battery case that looks swollen
  • Needing a jump start more than once in a few months

Why it happens so often here

Three things particular to life in Dubai wear batteries down: sustained heat, short stop-start journeys with the air conditioning on full, and cars left parked for weeks during summer travel. The guide to battery life in UAE heat explains each one and what you can do about it.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What should I do if my car won't start because of a dead battery?

Switch off all electrical loads, make sure the car is safely parked, and call or WhatsApp us with your location. A technician will jump start the car, test the battery and charging system, and replace the battery on the spot if it has failed.

How do I know if it is the battery or the alternator?

If the car starts with a jump and keeps running but will not restart later, suspect the battery. If the battery warning light is on while driving, or the car dies while running, suspect the alternator. A charging system test confirms which.

Can a dead car battery be recharged instead of replaced?

If it is only discharged, yes. A battery that has been deeply discharged several times, is old, or has an internal fault will not recover and needs replacing.

Why does my car click but not start?

Rapid clicking is the starter solenoid trying to engage without enough current. In most cases the battery is discharged or worn out. A single loud click with bright lights points to the starter instead.

My car won't start after I came back from holiday. Is the battery dead?

Probably discharged, not necessarily finished. Modern cars draw a small current even when parked, and weeks of that can flatten a battery. A jump start and a test will show whether it has recovered.

Can I push start an automatic car?

No. Automatic cars cannot be push started. A booster pack or a jump start is the only way to start one with a flat battery.
